Somalisa Camp is set in the heart of Hwange National Park Zimbabwe, and is known as the land of the giants for its big elephant herds. Nestled in a stunning location tucked away on an acacia island along the edge of an ancient seasonal flood plain, Somalisa provides guests with breathtaking views of the savannah plains across the famous Kennedy Vlei line. Recently re-built, Somalisa Camp has upgraded its level of accommodation to that of complete comfort and luxury whilst still maintaining its focus on the guiding and hosting of guests to ensure the ultimate guest experience.

Consisting of seven elegantly furnished Sail Tents with gauze sliding doors, a glass wood-burner fireplace for the cold winter nights, and an floor fan for the hot summer days, each tent has en suite bathroom facilities including flush toilets, an indoor and outdoor shower, as well as a copper slipper-style bathtub. The main decking area includes split level decking with a separate lounge and dining area, as well as a small splash pool for guests overlooking the “Elephant Pool” and a natural waterhole where herds of game congregate to drink and where guests can relax whilst soaking in the African bush.

Activities include guided walks lead by qualified and passionate guides who will share their knowledge and love of the bush with you, game drives and night drives. Wildlife sightings include elephant, kudu, sable antelope, zebra, wildebeest, gemsbok, the rare and endangered roan antelope, buffalo, giraffe, lion, leopard, hyena, and many other wildlife species.

  1. Great Location and Staff

Somalisa is located in a wonderful part of Hwange – we saw most of the game we wanted to see, but the wild dogs and the lions were the highlights. Our driver/guide – Reggie – was just fantastic and made all of the game drives a real joy. We stayed in the upmarket Somalisa Acacia with our two 12 year old chidren. The interconnecting family tents worked out really well – as did having a splash pool. The waterhole directly in front attracts big game – elephants literally metres in front of you and walking through the camp. The food is superb and Tonny and his staff really attentive and helpful. There were only two downsides. A long 2 hour transfer to Hwange main camp in an open vehicle was tiring – and early in the morning very cold. And the tents do not have a thatched roof – so very hot in the day and cold in the spring – we visited in August – at night. The log burner is rather smelly so we did without. Other similar camps that we have been to do have thatched roofs to provide better insulation. But overall I would recommend this as a really good place to go

  2. Breathtaking

Somalisa is one of those places you can hardly forget. The efficient, professional staff (Denzel, Eugania, Armstrong, Honest, Takenda — just to name a few) are attentive, kind and gentle people who take pride in caring for your every need. They are proud of and care for Somalisa as if it were their own home. Home is what they want you to have while visiting here, home is where you are. Lounging by the pool and fresh water pond (specially made for the elephants) is not to be missed as watching an abundance of these magnificent beasts drink and splash around only feet from you is more than fun! Siesta is strongly encouraged and it’s hard to resist it in your beautiful tent — complete with a private porch, outdoor shower and one of the most comfortable beds you will ever sleep in. Game drives are fabulous especially if you love the beautiful animals in this part of Zimbabwe with beautiful settings for morning tea and afternoon sundowners. Ask your guides questions and hear about the history of this land, it’s people, the animals and their habits, guaranteed they will be more than happy to pass on their knowledge. Meals at Somalisa will take your floor even the biggest Foodie. It’s hard to imagine all the work that goes into cooking a plain meal at any of the Africa Bush Camps but here at Somalisa it is anything but simple. From breakfast to sundowners your stomach will not tire of eating any of the many meals. You will only want more, then comes dinner under the stars and it will blow you away night after night. Chef Tendai will make you want to take him home to be your personal chef! His meals are a feast fit for Kings and Queens that will be begging for more. Soak it in, this Africa at its best and beauty abounds here. Until we see you again…

  3. Magnificently Beautiful, Once in a Lifetime Experience!

Toward the end of our 3 week (July 2018) vacation to Africa, we stayed 4 days at Somalisa Acacia Family Camp. This trip was definitely a once in a lifetime experience for our family of 4 (13 year old daughter & 16 year old son)! The always friendly/professional staff, top notch (Indiana Jones Style) accommodations, gourmet-yet homey food/meals, always exciting game drives, families we were paired with & overall attentiveness were superb! I have to admit, as a Mom of a son who’s an extremely picky eater & an anaphylactic daughter, I had my concerns. The entire staff was conscious & accommodating to all our requests and -isms. We especially loved our Guide, Calvet Nkomo and our Hostess, Tsi Tsi. We will never forget the experience and all the fun we had with Mr. Calvet (especially driving up to 16 lions eating a giraffe, him doing a puma poop spitting contest with our daughter & watching him know exactly what page to reference every animal/plant was on.) Somalisa Acacia was worth the long journey from California and no wi-fi 🙂 !!!!!
