Sable Sands Hwange Lodge, situated on the magical Dete Vlei just outside Hwange National Park Main Camp, is the perfect safari getaway within a close range of Victoria Falls at only 180 km away on the main road to Bulawayo. The vlei (pronounced “flay”) is a dried up river with multiple waterholes of which a 7 km stretch forms part of the Sable Sands concession. Private game viewing is permitted in this region with game roaming freely between the concession and the Hwange National Park.

From within the shady tree line, the thatched structure of the main lodge overlooks the beautiful vlei and waterhole where the patient observer is rewarded by sightings of large herds of elephant, buffalo, zebra and various antelope species. The area is also frequented by lion, cheetah and occasionally leopard, hyena, wild dog and other predators. A wealth of birdlife will keep bird watchers occupied with over 400 species recorded here.
With warm hospitality, comfortable surroundings and fantastic game viewing, Sable Sands is a delight!

Sable Sands Lodge offers eleven lodge chalets, or ‘rondavels’ which are spread out around the lodge’s central swimming pool. Rooms can be easily arranged as twin, double or family rooms, all with small, private terrace areas. En-suite bathrooms are equipped with showers, hand basins, toilets, towels and luxurious bathroom amenities. Large mosquito nets and solar lights at night are also available.

  1. A very special place

My wife & I spent 3 nights at this fabulous bush camp in August. Just two hours on good roads from the excellent new airport at Victoria Falls (a 3 hour direct flight from our home in Cape Town), Sable Sands is the perfect place to relax and enjoy the bush. The waterhole in front of the Lodge was a hive of activity with a wide variety of game passing nearby. Food & accomodation are excellent and the very accomplished management and staff could not have been more accommodating and welcoming. And it was great value for money too. We’ll definitely go back!

  2. Sable Sands is a beautiful place close to Hwange

We stayed at Sable Sands as part of our southern Africa trip. It was without a doubt one of the nicest places we stayed during our trip. The huts were very comfortable and spacious. From the main lodge, there was a great view of animals as they passed through the grassland. The staff were most gracious and made the stay even better. If you are planning to visit Hwange this is certainly a place to consider.

  3. Paradise!

Have Just come back from an amazing time at sable sands! Spent one day and one night. We felt really welcome! Had an awesome time hearing the lions and hyenas at night. Staff and managers of sable sands were very helpful and welcoming. Accomodation was simply wonderful! My kids didn’t want to come back home. My daughters exact words “like paradise”
