Little Makalolo lies in the heart of one of the best game viewing areas in Hwange National Park. Overlooking a vibrant waterhole, it offers privacy for guests who enjoy small camps and a sense of remoteness. The camp’s six traditional-style tents – including a family unit – are spacious and en-suite, with indoor and outdoor showers. Solar power is used for tent lights and to heat water, ensuring a lighter environmental footprint.

Linking the tents to the main area are teak walkways. Here a false mopane tree in the centre of the camp shades a separate dining and living area with an open fire deck for those convivial evening fireside tales under the stars. A raised pool deck, which also shelters the bar and breakfast ‘room’, offers evocative views of the much-frequented waterhole in front of camp.

  1. Lovely Camp

My husband and I spent part of our honeymoon on safari at Little Makalolo. The staff was amazing and the lodging was nice. We enjoyed our game rides, but didn’t see as many animals as we had hoped (no lions, no other cats, only one single elephant, etc.) While we loved the camp, we’ll likely go to better game parks for future safaris to ensure better animal sightings.

  2. Fabulous visit, great camp

My family just spent 3 nights at Little Makalolo, and loved every minute of it. The setting is spectacular, the staff is gracious and attentive. Charles was our guide and was very knowledgeable, he tracked and found EVERY animal we’d hoped to see. He was also patient with our 3 generation group who weren’t always on the same page.

The family cabin was spacious and quite comfortable. It ended up much colder than we thought it would be, and we learned to love our hot water bottles! Breakfast by the fire was also a great way to start the day. The camp is remote and disconnected (no internet or cel service), and that ended up being the thing that made the stay here better than other stops. Everyone is just so present. This camp delivered the Africa experience, I highly recommend it.

  3. A superb camp in every way

I recently spent four nights at Little Makalolo camp.I have to say that I was simply stunned by the size of the concession where Little Makalolo is located. It’s vast and never overcrowded with vehicles from other camps. There were plenty of elephants at the hide.

The rooms were beautifully decorated and quite comfortable. They had two showers.

The food was excellent and plentiful. Ed was a fine manager as well as superb companion at dinner and around the campfire.Linda was a charming and sweet receptionist.

I must say that my guide Charles was nothing less than a magician, He seems to have the ability to find wildlife on command! We not only saw so many elephants, a herd of eland, two cheetahs, steenbok, two male lions, giraffes, wildebeest, eland. I even say a pride of lions stalking a buffalo. I do have to say that the highlight of my visit was seeing a pack of wild dogs which despite the large number of them in Hwange isn’t very common. I even saw them later harassing a herd of elephants.

    The birding was simply excellent.
